Age Calculator
An age calculator determines the exact amount of time that has elapsed between two dates, expressed in years, months, days, weeks, and total days. It is most commonly used to find a person's current age from their date of birth, but it can also measure the time between any two calendar dates — past or future.
How Age Is Calculated
Age is calculated by counting the number of complete years, months, and days between the date of birth and the reference date. The calculation works as follows:
- Years: The number of complete calendar years since the birth date. A year is only counted as complete once the anniversary of the birth date has passed.
- Months: The remaining complete months after subtracting full years. If the current day of the month is earlier than the birth day, one month is subtracted and the remaining days are recalculated from the previous month.
- Days: The remaining days after subtracting full years and months. This gives the precise remainder to the nearest day.
For example, if someone was born on March 15, 1990 and today is May 23, 2026, their age is 36 years, 2 months, and 8 days.
Understanding the Results
Total Days Lived
Total days is the raw number of calendar days between your date of birth and the reference date. This count includes leap years. A person who is 30 years old has lived approximately 10,957 days, depending on how many leap years fall within that period.
Total Weeks
Total weeks is the total days divided by 7, rounded down. A 30-year-old has lived approximately 1,565 complete weeks. This figure is often used in developmental contexts, particularly for infants and children where weekly milestones are tracked.
Total Months
Total months is calculated as the number of complete years multiplied by 12, plus any remaining complete months. This is the standard measure used in early childhood development — pediatricians typically track age in months for children under 2 years old.
Next Birthday Countdown
The calculator shows how many days remain until the next occurrence of the birth date. If the birthday has already passed in the current year, it counts forward to the next calendar year. If today is the birthday, the calculator displays a birthday greeting.
Leap Years and Age Calculation
A leap year has 366 days instead of the usual 365, with February 29 as the extra day. Leap years occur every 4 years, except for years divisible by 100 that are not divisible by 400. For example, the year 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 was not.
People born on February 29 (leap day) have a birthday that only appears on the calendar every four years. In non-leap years, they typically celebrate on either February 28 or March 1 depending on personal or legal convention. Our calculator treats February 28 as the equivalent date for age purposes in non-leap years.
Zodiac Signs
The Western zodiac assigns one of twelve signs to a person based on the position of the sun at the time of their birth. Each sign spans approximately 30 days of the calendar year. The twelve signs and their approximate date ranges are:
- Aries ♈ — March 21 to April 19
- Taurus ♉ — April 20 to May 20
- Gemini ♊ — May 21 to June 20
- Cancer ♋ — June 21 to July 22
- Leo ♌ — July 23 to August 22
- Virgo ♍ — August 23 to September 22
- Libra ♎ — September 23 to October 22
- Scorpio ♏ — October 23 to November 21
- Sagittarius ♐ — November 22 to December 21
- Capricorn ♑ — December 22 to January 19
- Aquarius ♒ — January 20 to February 18
- Pisces ♓ — February 19 to March 20
Common Uses for an Age Calculator
Legal and Administrative Age Verification
Many legal thresholds are tied to exact age — voting rights at 18, retirement eligibility, pension access, and age-based discounts all require knowing the precise date on which a person crosses an age milestone. An age calculator helps confirm exactly when that threshold is reached.
Medical and Health Contexts
Healthcare providers frequently need to know a patient's exact age in years and months. Pediatric dosing, growth chart percentiles, and developmental screening all depend on precise age. In obstetrics, gestational age is measured in weeks and days from the last menstrual period.
Age Between Any Two Dates
The calculator is not limited to finding age from birth to today. You can use it to find the age someone will be on a future date, how old a historical figure was at a specific moment in history, or the duration between any two meaningful events in your life.
How Age Is Defined Around the World
While most Western countries define age as the number of completed years since birth, other cultures use different systems. In East Asian age reckoning — traditionally used in China, Korea, and Japan — a person is considered one year old at birth and gains a year on each Lunar New Year. Under this system, a baby born the day before the new year is considered two years old the following day. South Korea officially moved to international age standards in 2023, though traditional age is still understood culturally. This calculator uses the internationally standard system: age increments on the anniversary of the birth date.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is age calculated when someone is born on February 29?
People born on February 29 (leap day) only have a calendar birthday every four years. In non-leap years, this calculator treats February 28 as the equivalent date for age calculation purposes — meaning their birthday is considered reached on February 28. Some legal jurisdictions use March 1 instead; for legal age verification in a non-leap year, confirm the applicable rule in your jurisdiction.
Why does total days differ from years × 365?
Leap years add an extra day every four years (with some exceptions). A person who has lived through several leap years will have more total days than a simple years × 365 calculation suggests. For example, a 30-year-old will have lived through approximately 7–8 leap years, meaning their total day count is closer to 10,957 than 10,950. This calculator counts actual calendar days, including all leap days within the date range.
What does "age in months" mean for adults?
Age in months is most practically used for infants and toddlers — pediatricians track development in months for children under 24 months. For adults, the month count is less commonly used in daily life but is accurate and can be useful in legal contexts where a specific number of months is referenced in a contract, policy, or regulation.
Can I calculate the age of something other than a person?
Yes. The age calculator works for any two dates — not just birth dates. You can use it to calculate the age of a building, a vehicle, a company, a relationship, or any event with a known start date. Enter the founding, manufacture, or start date as the "date of birth" and choose today (or any reference date) as the end date.
How many days old am I?
Enter your date of birth and leave the reference date as today — the calculator will show your exact total day count. As a general reference: 10,000 days is approximately 27 years and 4–5 months; 20,000 days is approximately 54 years and 9 months. Many people celebrate their 10,000-day birthday as a personal milestone.
What is the most common age calculation mistake?
The most common mistake is not accounting for whether the birthday has passed yet in the current year. If today is January 15 and someone was born on March 10, 1995, they are still 29 — not 30 — because their 30th birthday has not occurred yet this year. This calculator handles this correctly by checking whether the birth month and day have passed relative to the reference date before counting the final year.
